For the past couple of years, I’ve had the luck of having Toronto’s biggest and best winter burlesque festival hit on my birthday weekend. And this year, Girlesque 13 – produced by Great Canadian Burlesque – made it the best birthday ever!
Toronto was flooded with legends and headliners from all over the United States – Peekaboo Pointe, Jo “Boobs” Weldon, Johnny Porkpie, Coco Lectric, Nasty Canasta, Vivian Mirann and Tiffany Carter all came in for the show – and from all parts of Canada – Burgundy Brixx, Cherry Typhoon, Ms Chaos Divine, Koston Kreme, and more. And locally we had some fantastic Canadian Burlesque Hall of Fame performers gracing the stages of the El Mocambo and the MOD Club – Miss Mitzy Cream, Tanya Cheex, Miss Cadence, Sauci Calla Horra and Canadian Wolfman come to mind – as well as our fabulous Toronto performers who keep entertaining us all year long.
The biggest treat of the weekend for me was meeting superstar burlesque legend Miss Tempest Storm. If you’re not familiar with Ms Storm, her burlesque career has spanned more than 60 years and is famous not only for her flaming red hair, but fans used to swoon over her figure – 44DD-25-35! Being a big Bettie Page fan, I’m in awe of the fact that she starred with Bettie in Irving Klaw’s Teaserama in the 50s. I’m so glad to have had some time to get to know Ms Storm over the weekend and I will cherish the authographed photo – now to find the perfect spot for it!
