Latex + Corsets + | FAT | = LOVE
L ast year, I was fortunate enough to be an exhibiting photographer at the annual |FAT| Festival in Toronto with a collection of my burlesque photos( La Vie Burlesque – you can still see it on the website!). This year, I decided to join in the paparazzi fun and get a photo pass to shoot the fabulous alt fashion runway shows. What is |FAT| you ask? Aside from bucketloads of fun, “|FAT| Arts & Fashion Week is a platform for inventive, pioneering and contemporary expression. This annual multi-arts event features 200 national and international fashion designers, visual artists, bands and performers each year.” (|FAT| website). Over 5000 creatives pack a warehouse out in the west end for four days of runway, performance and photography, including models, photographers, media, stylists, buyers, curators, critics, musicians, and members of the public.
Aside from just coming for the general experience of it all – an extension of the performance photography that is the core of my work – I came for the latex, the vinyl, and the corsets! Although I only shot the Thursday and Friday evenings, I was able to experience the runway shows of some of my favourite alt fashion designers including House of Etiquette, Cinched Tight Corsets, Starkers! Corsetry, Wallace Playford, Pippa, Artifice Clothing, and Haphazard.
Check out some of my favourite picks of the show…
